Completely random thing to think about at 1am. But was reading an article on the Sunk Cost Fallacy. Link at the end of this post.

Scenario 1: You are on your way to watch a movie which costs $10. On your way to the cinema, you lose $10 from your wallet. Would you still proceed to buy the tickets?

88% of people would.

Scenario 2: You have bought the tickets for $10. You lost the tickets. Would you repurchase the tickets to watch the movie?

Only 46% of people would. Most would not.

If you really think about it, the 2 situations are absolutely identical. But even as I know this, and go through the scenarios again and again, I still arrive at different conclusions for both.

It’s mindboggling. The theory is that in Scenario 2, we tend to think that we have “assigned the money to a specific purpose”. Something like we plonk it into different ledgers in our head (in accounting terms haha). Thus justifying to ourselves the different choices.

This is WEIRD. Why does my brain work this way?

Diet resolution fail over the weekend. Before you judge me for dieting I must clarify that all my diet consists of is trying to eat healthily, not less. I’m trying to incorporate lots of vegetables, fruits, etc into what I eat, so that my body isn’t deprived of nutrients no thanks to my kopitiam weekday lunches.

So the idea is less oil, less fried food, less processed food. More greens, vegetables, clear soups, natural food.

Ok back to my diet fail. The question is not what I ate, but rather what didn’t I eat. T_T

Friday dinner: China Sq: Arabiatta pasta, pizza, 1 bottle of beer
Saturday lunch: Tandoor: Indian buffet (omg so good)
Saturday dinner: Can’t remember at all :S Did I not eat!?
Sunday lunch: The Wine Company: Crabmeat caesar salad (this is ok la), molten chocolate lava cake
Sunday dinner: Oishi Pizza: wasabi seafood pizza, cheesy mushroom pizza, breaded scallops
Sunday after-dinner: Red wine (so… unhealthy…)

As you can see there was not 1 bowl of soup or anything that’s not super rich and sinful! Aiyoyoyo so guilty. Time for a detox week!

Discovery. No matter how early I sleep, I wake up at the same time on weekdays.

I think it has something to do with my (lack of) motivation to proceed with the day’s (unexciting) activities.

Haaiii. 人生!

Update on 27 Sept 2011 (1 day later): Discovery #2. It appears that no matter how early I wake up, I still leave my house at the same time. SIGH.

It is pitch dark in my room except for my computer screen light. Saw a mosquito fly past my screen, into the darkness.

Instinctively, I reached my right hand out and grabbed an area based on intuition.

I didn’t think much of it until I opened my palm… and the mosquito flew out.

I have caught mosquitos with this “grabbing method” before, as opposed using my hands to “clap” the mosquito dead. Why? Out of sheer laziness. Cos grabbing only requires 1 hand; clapping requires 2.

Yes ladies and gentlemen, the extent of my laziness is quite deplorable.

Anyway for previous times, the lights were on. I’ve really outdone myself.

I have managed to catch a mosquito in absolute darkness based on sheer 1337ness (with a dash of awesome split-second distance/speed/time/direction calculation skills).

Gasp. /ninja
