Was here after work one day and feeling super hungry! They are currently having a 1-for-1 promotion, 1 main for 1 pasta free!
A pretty awesome deal if you ask me. Here’s what we had:
This is the roast chicken something. We chose it cos it was a “recommended” dish. It was okay, the brown sauce tasted quite generic. Not bad per se, but also not mouthwateringly good.
And then this is the “free” pasta, another “recommended” dish but again it was quite a lackluster experience. While the taste was quite rich and honestly not bad, as you can probably tell from the photo, the sauce was too thick and by the time it travelled from the kitchen on to our table, most of the water content was already gone.
We were left with very sticky and hard to eat pasta. Plus the 2 huge slices of ham (???) were impossible to bite into and were tasteless.
Despite all these, I wolfed down both dishes in record time because I was starving super badly, so at the very least, the food was filling and edible.
Meh while I’m at reviewing foundations I might as well do it all. There are only 2 shades for this, conveniently named Shade 1 and 2. I wear Shade 1. Have been using this on & off for about a year or so. My cousin bought it for me when she went to Korea. I only paid $12! Retails for about $38 in SG I think.
Pros
Texture: Very fluid, easily blendable, which is nice.
Cons
Colour: An ok match. It tends to an ashy tone which I don’t really like. It is probably meant for Korean/Japanese skin tones which are pinker. After application I didn’t feel like it was my-skin-but-better quality, nor did I hate it.
Unfortunately the ashy tone emphasized my dark undereye area though.
Bad Coverage: Almost non-existent. Please do not expect any coverage from this product. It’s a very sheer application. I guess you could try to build it up to 2 layers, but it cakes easily for me in hot & humid Singapore.
Finish: I wouldn’t say “glowy” nor “satiny” because that gives an falsely positive vibe about the finish. It’s simply… shiny. I dunno how to describe it but you know the sheen on your skin after applying lotion? Just slightly borderline greasy but yet not quite.
No Staying Power/Oxidization: This is the deal breaker for me. I am quite tolerant about the above inadequacies but to find that I look bronze by 12pm is not accpetable. And by the time I get home, 80% of the foundation has melted off, plus I look like I have toiled in the sun planting rice for a good part of the day. Eurgh.
I went to the beauty hall at Robinson’s after work just now with full intention to get some foundation. I was quite determined to get something from Shu Uemura, them being a well-known Japanese brand all. (With the logic that Asians make better products for Asians.)
Plus it helps that all the reviews on makeupalley were nothing short of glowing (ha pun!).
The sales assistant applied this on my face with a sponge and here’s my review…
Pros
Unfortunately none for me. :(
Cons
Colour: Dunno if it’s because the SA was bad but the foundation shade she chose did not make my skin look radiant/glowy. In fact I looked duller and my skin tone seemed chalky.
Coverage: In between sheer and medium. My freckles and pores were still very apparent.
Texture: Smooth, easily glides on skin. Very lightweight. But it is a drying formula. My skin immediately becomes bumpy if it’s dry, and it became bumpy within an hour of applying this foundation. Very annoying. It was plump and smooth again once I got home, removed the makeup and applied moisturiser.
Finish: Again I dunno if it’s because of the SA, but the foundation caked up on the drier areas of my face e.g. the sides of my nose. I suspect that she applied way too much. She used 1 pump for each side of my face. I read on makeupalley that a girl only used half a pump for her whole face so… /shrug
She also insisted that the cakey look was “normal at first”. Well looking at her own makeup I suppose she really believes so, because her makeup is about 1 inch thick and caking like nobody’s business.
Staying Power/Oxidization: I only wore the foundation from about 6pm+ to 10pm at night, but despite the short hours and it being night, I notice that the foundation got a bit darker by the time I got home. I attribute this to the wrong shade that I was matched with.
To Be Fair
Needless to say I did not go home purchasing this. But I believe that things may have been different if I encountered a more skilled SA who knew which shade my skin was, plus knew how to apply foundation. Also oilier skinned girls would probably have much better luck with this than me.
Just tried this! Minnie got it for me from TW (muacks ♥!). Many many raves around the Internet for it. Not going to go into details, since extensive reviews & instructions are readily available.
Please read the English instructions online first before using if your Chinese isn’t so great; I was struggling so badly to read the 繁体字 off the back of the box zzz.
I’m now staring in a mixture of disgust & fascination at my peeled off nose strip. It’s chock full of blackheads & whiteheads!
I notice they are stubbier and smaller than when I used Biore Pore Pack, and I attribute this to my HG which is “B.liv Off With Those Heads”. I have been a bit lazy in applying it so this mask was a good deep cleanse!
It was very drying though, especially for my already dry skin, so a hydrating mask is highly recommended afterwards. I think I’ll be using once every 1-2 months because any more frequently, my skin may become the sahara desert.
I’m horrified that all those stubs I see on the strip, were part of my face in the not so distant past (to be specific, 25 mins ago).
Good riddance, y’all!
♥
Update on 28 Jun 2011 (1 day later): I happened to be at a cosmetics counter. There was bright fluorescent lighting and a hugeass mirror, so I peered closely at it. I likes what I saw. My black/whiteheads are not 100% gone of course (this is not a magic wand), but my nose looked so clean! And amazingly the visible pores on my skin on the sides of my nose were gone. /jaw drops zomg
Had a semi-fancy lunch at Ochre with my colleagues a few weeks back!
I’m always a fan of nice restaurants (and who isn’t?) so this was a good break from my usual fish soup/chicken rice meals at work. :)
We all had the set lunch, which was surprisingly affordable for the quantity served. I chose the 4-course set which cost $45 (over the 2 & 3 courses) in a spate of gian peng-ness, and kinda regretted afterwards cos it was too much for my dainty stomach. /shameless but not really
Started off with the usual bread plus olive oil & balsamic vinegar thingy:
Always nice for me because I love balsamic vinegar but the bread was a bit stale.
The appetizer was a fancy sampler dish consisting of 6 unidentifiable bite sized things:
I managed to find out that the bottom right piece was ootoro, and the top left piece was a mushroom. Ha.
Anyway it tasted quite average too. The salad was fresh and crunchy and the rest was all acceptable but I didn’t think it was fantastic.
The appetizer was followed with a half serving of pesto linguine:
The pasta was a bit too soft and not al dente at all (trying to sound cheem yo), but I liked the soft greens and also the prosciutto ham. The saltiness was quite a good complement to the slightly creamy linguine.
Next up we have the main:
Pesto… again. While I question having 2 pesto dishes within the same set menu, I guess it makes economical sense for them. /shrug
Below the salmon, if you can spot in the photo, are mashed potato with assorted grilled (?) vegetables. I loved that! No so much the actual main of salmon though. Then again I’m not a fan of well-done salmon so I’m not the best judge. Why did I choose salmon then, may you ask? Because the alternative was beef… which I do not eat anymore FYI. (Unless it’s already ordered I will take a few bites but then I’m determined not to contribute to the demand.)
Ok. Last up the dessert, green tea tiramisu, was served:
Very soft, very creamy, very green tea, and very tiramisu. Of course it helps that tiramisu is my favourite dessert. The green tea powder on the top was slightly bitter which was perfect!
I will definitely come again. :)
